What to look for in a 'high quality' tread: it's made from select & better hardwood lumber. It should be constructed out of 4-7 pcs. of lumber and glued together with a high quality wood glue. The pieces of lumber in the tread should be color matched, thus providing a consistent appearance.

How to spot a 'low quality' tread: it's made from only 1-3 pcs. of hardwood lumber... this would have little strength and/or structural integrity. Also, a tread made from 8-12 pcs. of lumber... these are very hard to color match, show distinct color variations and may even delaminate.
